| Don't Let the Dust Settle Before We Act - Deborah Barit - 26 Nov 2007 |

As the newly elected Rudd government begins to set its priorities and agenda, the Australian Employers' Network on Disability has an opportunity to take disability employment issues up to a new level. This is the perfect time to remind the new Government of the importance of their leadership role in facilitating the entry of people with disability into the labour market. While our member organisations, employing over 800,000 people, lead by example in tackling key issues of employment access for people with disability, surely it is time for the Government and public sector to do the same. As the Prime Minister and Cabinet begin discussions with the heads of Commonwealth Government Departments on implementing their policies, let us ensure that this conversation encompasses inclusive and merit-based public sector recruitment. The new line-up of Ministers should also be encouraged to show leadership in providing training and employment opportunities for people with a disability within their own departments. It was heartening to see new MP Maxine McKew state in a recent interview that, as well as the issues that affect her constituency; she is also interested in the "challenges facing people with disabilities and those who look after the disabled". (Gerard Noonan SMH November 27, 2007). We must build on this. Now is the time for the Employers’ Network on Disability to use its collective voice to ensure that opportunities for people with disability are squarely on the government's agenda. Look forward to an action filled New Year. Deborah Barit Director, Impressive Interviews On a personal note, I would like to thank Tim, Sam, Mark, Rachel and Frances for all their hard work in developing a solid and viable base for continued growth. I would also like to thank John Bennet and the Board for actively taking on board the views and suggestions of the Associates.
