International Day of People with Disability 2009

Annual Cocktail Party

On Tuesday 1st December 2009 the Employers' Network held our Annual Cocktail Party to celebrate International Day of People with Disability, once again generously hosted by The Westpac Group.

Featuring performances by Krystel Keller and presentations from Bill Shorten and Graeme Innes, the evening was inspiring and entertaining.

We were fortunate to have some fabulous artworks on display, by artists with disability from Studio Artes in Hornsby.  Almost half of the pieces were sold on the night!  As all proceeds go to the artists themselves this was a fantastic result.

Don't Dis My Ability Ambassador Krystel Keller performed two beautiful songs, translated into Auslan by a very expressive Kathy Wright.  The combined impact was very moving and beautiful to watch and hear.

Disability Discrimination Commissioner Graeme Innes gave us his annual Report Card on disability discrimination throughout the country.  While there were a few cheers and reasons for celebration, there are still a disappointing number of Australian organisations who are far from disability confident.

Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities Bill Shorten gave a frank and honest presentation, expressing his frustration at the speed at which changes occur, and his disappointment in the recurring complaints against Australian businesses (particularly airlines).

Both Graeme and Bill agreed there is much to be done, and with these two powerful, inspiring and intelligent men at the forefront we have great confidence that positive change will occur!
